Have you recently completed training for 4th or 5th class power engineering? To complete your certification, TSBC requires you to complete your firing time. Often, students will need to find trainee positions in various plants to attain their hours.
We’ve opened the work experience program at TFM for 5th and 4th class power engineering students who have completed a full-time training program and need hands-on experience to complete their interprovincial certificate or qualification. If you’re a student wanting to advance your career, but you’re struggling to bridge the gap between training and employment, keep reading to learn why TFM’s work experience program is exactly what you need.
What Our Students Get Out Of The Work Experience Program
Prior to training, all students undergo an orientation of the program and the equipment. Each student will be given a manual, which includes the boiler manual and a logbook to record their work experience. They will also need to pass a Basic Boiler Safety test prior to operating the boiler.
Confidence In Their Abilities
During the 5th and 4th class training, the focus is on demonstrations and in-class learning. The work experience program applies the theory learned in the classroom to real-world troubleshooting and daily operations. There are currently seven labs and counting. Each lab gives you experience with different types of equipment, preparing you for the variety of equipment found in the field.
Mentorship And Networking
At TFM, we’re working to bridge the knowledge gap between experienced professionals and newcomers to the industry. The best way to do that is with experienced instructors as mentors. We want you to succeed in your career and excel as a power engineer ready to pass your knowledge on to the next generation as well.
Employers know that students from TFM are well-trained, accountable, and ready to excel in their professional careers.
Career-Ready Skills
In other programs, you’re likely to be rushed through your hands-on experience. Labs are set up for a month at a time, with a sign-off at the end that you’ve completed your hours. Learning this way is sufficient on paper, but we can say with experience that it does not reflect the real working environment.
In this program, you spend two hours a day focused on what a power engineer does. The rest of the day is filled with other industry tasks related to the job. This program focuses on teaching you these skills over several months and earning your firing time; rather than trying to get you in and out to fit as many students as possible in a short time.
The Future Of TFM’s Work Experience Program
The future of TFM is always growing. We support power engineers across Canada and are constantly expanding the labs we have available. The work experience program is designed to be flexible and student-centred to accommodate working and part-time students. We’re creating opportunities for continuous improvement in our program and for our students.
Power engineering safety is always evolving, and we’re staying up to date with its dynamic state. TFM’s big picture is to train students today to become tomorrow’s supervisors and chief engineers. The best way to do that is to provide as much hands-on experience and guidance as possible.
