Refrigeration Plant Operator Explained

A refrigeration plant operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of refrigeration systems in industrial or commercial settings. This may include maintaining the equipment, troubleshooting and repairing issues that arise, and monitoring the performance of the system to ensure it is operating efficiently.

Some specific duties of a refrigeration plant operator may include:

  • Monitoring and adjusting the temperature, pressure, and flow of refrigerants
  • Performing routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning and lubricating equipment, replacing worn or damaged parts, and checking for leaks
  • Troubleshooting and repairing problems with the system, such as malfunctioning controls or leaks in the system
  • Operating and adjusting controls to start, stop, and regulate the flow of refrigerants
  • Inspecting and testing equipment to ensure it is in good working condition
  • Maintaining accurate records of maintenance and repair activities

To become a refrigeration plant operator, you typically need to have a high school diploma or equivalent and complete an apprenticeship or formal training program in refrigeration technology.

Many employers also require certification from a professional organization – such as ours. As well, having strong mechanical skills and the ability to troubleshoot and repair problems with equipment are important skillsets.
